blackjack dealer hand clap

They're the ones who get real ticked off if they're losing. It isn't for everybody. Some people just let their emotions and their greed get to them. As a dealer, I have to control my game, meaning set my own pace. I work nine-hour shifts, and I get a minute break every hour. Some dealers think a good dealer is a quick one. People who are there every night-to win-are the ones that probably have a gambling problem. What am I going to say? This sounds corny, but there's good and bad in everybody. At the end of the week, we pool them, and we have what's called a toke rate, which is what we make per hour. If the player wins, we drop the tip in what's called a toke box-toke, that is, for token; we don't call them tips officially. Sometimes I'm just wiping them out-I mean, killing them-and they start getting furious. There are surveillance cameras on every game. I really did learn that. I can't be tired. I could be in on a scam. Being a dealer is hard, but at the same time it's easy. They're slow, they don't shuffle well.

Background: McFadden, 24, grew up in Linwood, N. Interview by free-lance writer Andrew J.

The money is in the tips: the casino pays us minimum wage. People will want to shake my hand, but I can't because I might have stolen something off the game and could be trying to slip it to them. I knew how much dealers made, so I quit college and went to dealing school. I have to watch my money, and I have to make sure everyone's playing by the book. When people find out I'm a dealer, they start asking me all kinds of questions. There are good and bad high-limit players and good and bad low-limit players. There were some wild stories in Atlantic City about people stealing from dealers. She underwent an eight-week training program at the Casino Career Institute in Atlantic City and began dealing blackjack at the Taj Mahal when it opened in April of She subsequently was hired by the Hollywood Casino in Aurora, where she has worked since its opening in June of McFadden, who is single, resides in Aurora. When I place cards, I have to make sure the cameras can count the spots. I don't want to run the customers over, but I can't let them slow me down. I punch out, I'm done, and I don't have to think about work again. I have to know what's going on in my game. If you're a strong dealer, you take control of your game, and you don't let people try any funny stuff. He lost it in one hand. If I let the customers control the game, they'll take advantage of me. If they lose the hand, the casino gets their money, and we lose the tip. It's fun when the customers are there to have a good time and they're winning money and tipping me. A while ago, this person was happy and tipping me; now they're losing, and they're a different person. People get angry. You can't lump people together. That's true with any job. We can't turn away from the table. You have to care enough to want to be good. It's just my job; I do it every night. There are people who love it, love it, love it-love to gamble. I have to do everything by procedure so the cameras understand. Then he started winning all this money. He was just lucky. It's like working in a factory. As a blackjack dealer, I try to please the customers, who are having a good time, but then I win the hand, and I wipe everybody out. I once dealt to this kid who looked to be about He started out with 50 bucks, he didn't know how to gamble, and he had his girlfriend behind him. His girlfriend was getting all excited. We have to look front and center all the time. They blame the dealer because they want to blame someone. Unfortunately, as a dealer, I see greed. I went to college for a while, but where I grew up, in South Jersey, the casinos were right there of them. Dealers are just regular people. It's really good money, and it lures you. There are some people who never get it. It makes me crazy watching it sometimes, but I can't say anything. If there's a problem customer, the management makes sure the dealers know who it is. The cheaters can spot the weak dealers. That's why the casinos are packed every night. Some people play golf, some go to a bar, others go to the casino. They start blaming stuff on me when I have no control over the cards. When I go on a break, I have to "clap off the game. I guess they just don't care if they're good or not. That's not the case. I need that break because I'm in the spotlight, and I have to be fresh. People think dealers are some sort of elite group. The casino wants us to be friendly; they don't want a miserable dealer. They're gambling their money away, but some see it as if I'm taking it. That's not necessarily true. The biggest thing I've learned in my job is that people are the same whether they have money or not. People think that the casino pays us a lot of money. Sometimes we get customers who could care less if we're miserable because they're not paying attention to us, but most people would like a friendly face, someone happy who talks to them. When I was there, somebody once threw a smoke bomb on a crap table to cause a distraction so someone else could grab money from another table. I can see it in their faces, they start to get mad and rude. Most people tip when they're winning, but some lose hundreds of dollars and they still tip me. I don't know. The cameras are watching dealers too. They don't want to read the number on the card, they want to be able to count. Dealers have to be able to handle the public, and gamblers are a different kind of public. I've got to be alert. The casino also wants to make sure the dealers always have their eye on their money because people will try to distract us and take it. They think I know whether they're going to win or not when they gamble. I get regulars that I see every night, and they're just having fun; it's their leisure.
